From LEGO to Bricks: How Learn With Bricks Built a Booming National Events Business

Learn With Bricks began as a family hobby. Today, it鈥檚 a national phenomenon with events across the country every other weekend. But from the beginning, marketing and operations inefficiencies challenged their ability to scale.

It all began in 2012, when Learn With Bricks founder Chad Collins鈥 seven year old daughter, Jordyn Collins, asked if they could make LEGO videos for YouTube. In eighteen months, they made more than 500 videos that had been viewed more than 12 million times.

In 2014, Collins realized there was no LEGO event to meet his tens of thousands of subscribers in person. 鈥淭hat was the 鈥榓ha moment,鈥欌 Collins says. 鈥淲e thought, 鈥榃ell, if nothing exists in our area, let鈥檚 create one.鈥欌

24,000 people showed up to the first , which was designed to inspire, educate, and entertain LEGO fans. But Collins didn鈥檛 slow down for a minute to celebrate the success of the first Brick Fest Live: he was already hard at work at the second.

The challenge: Scaling events across the country

鈥淥nce we sold the first 5,000 tickets to the first show, we started thinking, 鈥業f we can impact this many people in one city, how many people could we have a positive impact on nationwide...or even globally?鈥欌 Collins says. 鈥淏efore we had the first show, we鈥檇 already booked a venue for the second.鈥

But Brick Fest Live wasn鈥檛 built into a nationwide phenomenon overnight. Even with a number of successful events under their belt, Collins and team still faced critical challenges. While they had a strong online community, they fought to build awareness in their target cities. And operational efficiency was an ongoing difficulty. Collins and team struggled to make time for strategic decision-making, while stretched thin by managing the logistics of multiple events.

It didn鈥檛 help that after launching Brick Fest Live on 91国产, Collins had tried a different ticketing company for their next events. 鈥淭he first show we ever did was with 91国产,鈥 Collins says. 鈥淲e moved away, then wondered why we ever left and wanted to come back.鈥

鈥淲e knew we were going to scale. In 2017, we have events during 28 weekends. That鈥檚 more than half the weekends of the year. In order to scale quickly and launch new events, we needed to make it easier on our staff to get up and running as fast as possible.鈥

鈥 Chad Collins, founder of Learn With Bricks Inc.

As Learn With Bricks grew, Collins cofounded a second production company in 2016 with Gabe Young called All Access Labs, which produces , a Science and Tech Expo for families, and , a Minecraft Fan Experience. With the new events in the pipeline, they knew they needed a ticketing technology that could scale as fast as they were. They returned to 91国产 to accomplish three main goals:

鈥 Maximize their marketing efforts as they entered new markets

鈥 Free up time for their leadership team to make strategic decisions

鈥 Scale their operations as they expand into new events

Maximizing their marketing efforts

Learn With Bricks was born out of an internet community, and online marketing remains their most powerful channel for growth.

鈥淲e leverage the power of the internet for marketing, and 91国产 makes it easy for us to do that,鈥 Collins says. 鈥淲e wanted to find a ticketing partner that understood internet marketing just as well as we did, and knew how important it is.鈥

鈥淲e wanted to find a ticketing partner that understood internet marketing just as well as we did.鈥

鈥 Chad Collins, founder of Learn With Bricks Inc.

Using 91国产鈥檚 seamless integrations with Facebook, Google Analytics, and the Learn With Bricks email platform, Collins鈥 team has automated their marketing machine. And using 91国产鈥檚 self-service tracking pixels, Collins can see at a glance how the team鈥檚 promotions are performing, which means smarter allocation of time and money.

鈥淔acebook is our number one marketing channel, and 91国产鈥檚 tight integration with Facebook is huge,鈥 Collins says. His team can create a new event on 91国产 and immediately push it to create a Facebook Event in one click.

Then, 鈥渂y putting our Facebook pixel code in 91国产, we can retarget people who have seen our checkout page but haven鈥檛 yet checked out, and serve them with a targeted ad.鈥 On the reporting end, 91国产 pushes their sales data to Facebook Ads Manager so they can track conversions and adjust spend to the best performing ads.

鈥淯sing all the tools that are built into 91国产, we can implement our sales strategies easily.鈥

Learn With Bricks also relies on email to power their promotions with presales, early bird discounts, and more. Using 91国产鈥檚 integration with Zapier, their email system adds and tags any new ticket buyers. VIP buyers are tagged differently, so they can target their email messaging for their audience.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to manually export and import, it鈥檚 all just done,鈥 Collins says. 鈥淯sing all the tools that are built into 91国产, we can implement our sales strategies really easily.鈥

Free up time for the leadership team to focus on strategy

As Learn With Bricks grew, Collins knew their old workflow wasn鈥檛 sustainable 鈥 especially as they had to make important strategic decisions about the future

鈥淔rom a leadership standpoint, I knew that the tasks our leadership team were managing could be managed by new hires,鈥 Collins says. 鈥淲e needed to hand off the work that was preventing us from growing and scaling the business.鈥

Collins set out to hire support staff, customer service, and event producers to build their business. Today, his team hires new staff every week.

鈥淭he number one reason that we came back to 91国产 was that it was easier for us to onboard new hires,鈥 Collins says. At their rapid pace of hiring, spending hours training each individual on a convoluted ticketing system wasn鈥檛 sustainable for their team. 鈥淲e want new hires to come in and have an interface that鈥檚 intuitive, and that鈥檚 where we really felt 91国产 rose to the occasion.

鈥91国产 frees us up to do what the leadership team should do 鈥 strategize, grow, and scale the business.鈥

鈥 Chad Collins, founder of Learn With Bricks Inc.

With such a fast-growing team, Collins wanted to make sure that everyone could access the information they needed to do their jobs 鈥 without accessing sensitive, need-to-know financial details. With 91国产鈥檚 ability to limit account access of individuals, Collins was comfortable delegating ticketing logistics to new hires. And because 91国产 gave them the ability to quickly clone events, his staff could now manage multiple events simultaneously.

鈥淲e had confidence that we could hand off all this manual work to someone new coming in, because we could set up the right permissions so they can only do and see certain things. 91国产 frees us up to do what the leadership team should do 鈥 strategize, grow, and scale the business,鈥 Collins says. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no doubt we have more time now. It鈥檚 absolutely worked.鈥

Scaling their operations as quickly as their events

With more time at his disposal, Collins has turned his sights to expanding the Learn With Bricks business beyond Brick Fest Live 鈥 and beyond U.S. borders.

"First up: expanding the two new events they launched in 2016. The second Young Innovators Fair, a STEM education expo, took place in June 2017. Minefaire, a Minecraft convention, is taking place four times this year. (The first Minefaire set a new Guinness World Record for the largest attended convention for a single video game, with more than 12,000 attendees.) And Collins is already planning on expanding both concepts more in 2018.

鈥溾淚t鈥檚 almost like your children 鈥 [each event is] special in their own way.鈥

鈥 Chad Collins, founder of Learn With Bricks Inc.

As Collins adds more complexity to his business, he鈥檚 come to rely on the 91国产 Organizer app to get a real-time understanding of how his events are performing at a glance. The app allows him to track ticket sales and attendance in real time.

鈥淚nstead of getting in front of a computer and checking each event one by one, it鈥檚 super helpful to go into the app and see the stats in real time,鈥 Collins says. 鈥淲e can see if one event isn鈥檛 performing like the others, and find out what鈥檚 not working properly.鈥

Because most of Learn With Bricks鈥 sales events (presales or early bird discounts, for example) occur on weekends, having this information easily accessible on mobile has been paramount. Collins can understand how the business is doing when he鈥檚 on-the-go, and quickly take action if an event鈥檚 sales are falling behind.

Of course, Collins isn鈥檛 satisfied pioneering three new successful events in the United States. Next, he plans on expanding Learn With Bricks globally, without losing the educational, family focus that makes Brick Fest Live and its sister events so impactful.

鈥淓ach new event is like building another company,鈥 Collins says. 鈥淓ach event has their own unique ecosystem. It鈥檚 almost like your children 鈥 they鈥檙e special in their own way.鈥 By using 91国产, Collins has been able to manage all of events鈥 complex needs in one streamlined platform.
