Chinese Calligraphy Workshop

Founded in fall of 2016 under the Division of Arts & Humanities at UC San Diego, the Institute of Arts & Humanities (IAH) encourages interdisciplinary research, teaching and public dialogue in the Arts and Humanities. We bring diverse thinkers and communities together to share insights, produce new findings and address the challenges we all face on our campus and in our world. We are especially committed to issues concerning social equity, diversity and inclusion; the hemispheric and global arts and humanities; public arts and humanities and digital arts and humanities.The IAH offers excitingprogramsfor undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and the broader university and San Diego communities. From our 14 undergraduate, graduate and research programs and centers in area, ethnic and language studies, to our many faculty-driven research clusters and workshops, to our on-going projects in the public and digital humanities, we offer multiple ways to participate in our dialogue. Chinese calligraphy workshops with special guest Joan Yin from the San Diego Botanic Garden.

UC San Diego’s <a href="https://chinesestudies.ucsd.edu/" title="https://chinesestudies.ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Chinese Studies Program</a>, <a href="https://taiwan.ucsd.edu/" title="https://taiwan.ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Center for Taiwan Studies</a> and the Library are co-hosting two Chinese calligraphy workshops with special guest Joan Yin from the San Diego Botanic Garden. The first session will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the second session will be held from 12 to 1 p.m.Joan will give live demonstrations at the workshop, and then attendees will be free to try their hands at Chinese calligraphy or brush painting skills. Xi Chen, the Sally T. WongAvery Librarian for Chinese Studies, will be in attendance and available for questions.This workshop is open to anyone in the UC San Diego community who wishes to learn Chinese calligraphy. Seating is limited, so advanced registration is encouraged to ensure your spot. (Check back soon for the registration link!)<h2>About the Artist</h2>Born and raised in Taiwan, Joan has always loved calligraphy and art. After graduating college with a degree in art, she studied fashion in Japan and worked in the fashion industry for years before moving to the US. Her work can be seen in North Carolina Museum of History, multiple city libraries in San Diego, Spanish Village in Balboa Park, San Diego Botanic Garden as well as Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Joan is an active member at the La Jolla Art Association and San Diego Long Hsiang painting group. She also teaches monthly brush painting workshops at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas.This event is generously supported by funding from the Sally T.
