Museum Meetup: Edmonia Lewis at Peabody Essex Museum in Salem
Queering the Museum: An Edmonia Lewis LGBTQ+ History Teach-In
Edmonia Lewis was a trailblazer — a Black and Indigenous sculptor who built an international career in 19th-century Rome on her own terms. PEM's exhibition Said in Stone is a stunning opportunity to see her work. However, the exhibit overlooks Lewis' queer and trans community connections.
Queer History Boston is hosting a community meet-up and teach-in on May 30th. Explore the exhibition and join us to dig into the queer interpretation of Lewis's life and world that the show leaves out. We'll have copies of our new zine Archival Silences: Was Edmonia Lewis Queer? to share, along with — a guide to finding the queer histories hiding in plain sight in cultural institutions.
This is a drop-in event. Come for the whole afternoon or just part of it. Bring a friend. Bring your questions.
