Before America was an established power, it was a bold experiment balanced on the edge of uncertainty — guided by a remarkable group of leaders who would define both the presidency and the nation itself. From revolution and fragile independence to political rivalries and deepening divisions, how did seven very different men navigate the immense challenges of a brand-new republic — and what truths lie beyond the legends we think we know? It’s time to journey through the drama, ambition, and legacy of the first presidents, and uncover how their decisions continue to shape the United States today.
Join for a seven-part series exploring the presidents of the American Revolution and the pivotal role they played in shaping a new nation. In Part Two: John Adams, we’ll explore the career and contributions of the “Colossus of Independence,” from his role in fueling the push for revolution to his leadership during one of the most turbulent early presidencies.
Led by presidential historian Louis L. Picone, this deep dive into America’s founding era will include:
- A look at Adams’ early legal career and rise — including his central role in colonial unrest and his defense of British soldiers after the Boston Massacre
- An exploration of Adams as a leading voice for independence — becoming the most prominent advocate for separation from England in 1776
- A discussion of Adams’ diplomatic career abroad — serving in France, England, and the Netherlands during both war and peace
- An overview of Adams’ presidency — including the Quasi-War with France, the XYZ Affair, and the Alien and Sedition Acts
- Insight into Adams’ later life and legacy — from his correspondence with Thomas Jefferson to restore a broken friendship to his lasting place among the Founding Fathers
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Louis — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
