(READ FULL INFORMATION) Join us in partnership with renowned naturalist & forager Wildman Steve Brill for a unique 3-hour foraging walk in Central Park, discovering edible wild plants, greens, seeds, and herbs that flourish even in late winter.


This beginner-friendly experience invites New Yorkers and visitors to explore the land through a new lens, learn plant identification, and reconnect with nature through curiosity, stewardship, and education.


🌿 What You’ll Learn

Participants will learn how to identify and ethically gather a range of wild edibles that thrive in cold months, such as:

  • Field garlic (spicy onion-like bulbs + chive-like greens)
  • Star chickweed
  • Garlic mustard greens (horseradish-flavored taproots)
  • Hairy bittercress
  • Daylily shoots
  • Sheep sorrel (lemony, edible “weed”)
  • Ground ivy
  • Sassafras & Kentucky coffee trees (used for beverages)
  • Dandelion greens…and more seasonal species!

Wildman will discuss plant flavors, culinary uses, ecology, and ethical foraging practices throughout the walk.


Location: At the stone benches in front of Prospect Park's Grand Army Plaza entrance

MEET UP & INFO:

The 3-hour foraging tour of begins at 12pm, at the stone benches behind the farmer's market, by the stone wall, between the columns with the eagles, at Prospect Park's Grand Army Plaza entrance, across from the library, not under the traffic circle.

The suggested donation is $20/adult, $10 for kids under 12. You may call (914) 835-2153 at least 24 hours ahead to reserve a place.

Please arrive 10 minutes early to check in.

This walk is donation-based to support Wildman’s educational work.
