From island architecture and urban skylines to national parks shaped by time, America tells its story through places as bold and varied as the people who built them. How do these diverse natural and manmade environments come together to shape a uniquely American identity? It’s time to embark on a sweeping journey uncovering the architecture, culture, and character that define the United States across its most remarkable landscapes.

Join as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday with an epic 10-part series exploring a curated selection of stories, influences, and environments that have shaped the nation’s most iconic places. In Part One: Hawaii, we’ll dive into a world where architecture and daily life are deeply rooted in the rhythms of nature and the traditions of island culture.

Led by tour guide Kelsey Betzelberger, this experience — featuring plenty of firsthand photo and video walkthroughs, intriguing anecdotes, and expert insights — will include:

  • Maui Modernism and island living — discover the relaxed elegance of Maui’s architecture, where open-air lanais, low-slung roofs, and natural materials in places like Wailea blend seamlessly with volcanic landscapes and ocean breezes, creating homes fully connected to the environment
  • Honolulu’s skyline and historic layers — explore a striking mix of sleek high-rises, mid-century modern hotels, and historic landmarks like Ê»Iolani Palace, reflecting Hawaii’s evolution from royal past to global destination
  • Beach architecture and local flavors — experience traditional beach hut design along Waikiki Beach, where simple wood structures and breezy layouts meet ocean views, alongside Hawaiian cuisine including fresh poke, tropical fruits, and plate lunches
  • Cultural traditions in motion — witness the heart of Hawaiian culture through hula dance performances and the art of lei making, where fragrant flowers are woven into symbols of welcome, celebration, and connection
  • Ocean life and island craftsmanship — set out from Lahaina Harbor for whale watching, then explore local artistry from Polynesian-inspired tattoo traditions to intricately carved gourds, each reflecting heritage, identity, and island life

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Kelsey — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
