From island architecture and urban skylines to national parks shaped by time, America tells its story through places as bold and varied as the people who built them. How do these diverse natural and manmade environments come together to shape a uniquely American identity? It’s time to embark on a sweeping journey uncovering the architecture, culture, and character that define the United States across its most remarkable landscapes.
Join as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday with an epic 10-part series exploring a curated selection of stories, influences, and environments that have shaped the nation’s most iconic places. In Part Four: Chicago, we’ll explore the city that gave rise to the modern skyscraper, where bold innovation, engineering breakthroughs, and architectural ambition transformed the urban landscape.
Led by tour guide Kelsey Betzelberger, this experience — featuring plenty of firsthand photo and video walkthroughs, intriguing anecdotes, and expert insights — will include:
- Chicago Riverwalk and skyline innovation — stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk, where bold architecture lines the water, from the iconic Marina City “corn cob” towers and the sleek glass façade of Trump International Hotel and Tower to the X-braced John Hancock Center and the curving modern design of Aqua Tower
- Navy Pier and lakefront design — head out to Navy Pier, where classic leisure architecture meets sweeping views of Lake Michigan, blending entertainment, public space, and shoreline design in one of the city’s most vibrant gathering spaces
- Millennium Park’s modern icons — explore Millennium Park, home to the mirrored curves of Cloud Gate (“The Bean”) and the interactive Crown Fountain, where contemporary art and architecture merge in playful and engaging ways
- Art, culture, and city life — step into the renowned Art Institute of Chicago, wander the Magnificent Mile beneath historic façades, and take in the glowing marquee of the Chicago Theatre, showcasing the city’s cultural depth
- Skyline views and local flavors — take in breathtaking views from the Skydeck on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower, then experience Chicago’s culinary identity with deep-dish pizza and a classic Chicago-style hot dog
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Kelsey — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
