Build a Self-Watering Plant System

Build a Self-Watering Plant System

Overview

Teens build a smart self-watering plant system while learning coding, physical computing, and 3D design in a full-week STEM workshop.

Build a Self-Watering Plant System is a hands-on engineering and coding workshop for students ages 13–18 where participants will design and build an automated plant watering system using Arduino, moisture sensors, water pumps, and C++ programming. Students will also explore 3D design with Fusion to create custom engineering parts and prototype components for their smart plant system.

Throughout the class, students will learn concepts connected to environmental engineering, electronics, coding, and product design while developing real-world STEM skills through building and experimentation. Materials for in-class prototypes, including Arduino components, water pumps, and 3D prints, will be provided. Students who would like to continue the project at home will need to purchase their own Arduino board and moisture sensor. A Fusion 3D account is required for participation, and students may print plant pods and additional 3D engineering elements for free at the STEM Center.
