Rising from landfill and shaped by visionary planning, Battery Park City is more than a waterfront neighborhood — it’s a curated landscape of art woven into everyday life. From monumental memorials to playful sculptures and thought-provoking installations, how did this riverside Manhattan enclave become a powerful platform for artistic expression and civic dialogue? It's time to step into a setting where history, environment, and creativity converge at every turn.

Join as we explore the public art of Battery Park City, a manmade neighborhood along the Hudson River that has transformed from reclaimed land into a vibrant residential enclave where art fosters cultural awareness, social connection, and dialogue around environmental and civic issues.

Led by museum educator and art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo, our virtual experience will include:

  • A background on the creation and development of Battery Park City, built atop landfill from the original World Trade Center excavation in the 1970s
  • An overview of early Land Art projects, featuring visionary works by Agnes Denes and Mary Miss
  • A closer look at significant site-specific installations, including the Irish Hunger Memorial and Andy Goldsworthy's Holocaust memorial
  • An exploration of sculpture as both form and function, with seating designs by Scott Burton and Richard Artschwager, and immersive works like Martin Puryear’s Pylons
  • A survey of permanent and rotating public art, highlighting works by Louise Bourgeois, Jim Dine, Tony Cragg, Tom Otterness’ Real World, and recent installations by Mildred Howard, James Yaya Hough, and Muna Malik

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
